Previously while I was doing paper work I talked about the pros and cons of High School life. This being my 4 1/2 year in college (I was post secondary my senior year of high school that's gotta count for something) I have to express my feelings towards higher education.
I think college is alot easier than high school, hear me out first alright? Since Ohio State is on quarters not semesters I take around 3 classes a quarter. Each class meets twice a week and no class on Fridays. So thats 6 classes a week instead of 40 classes a week in high school. Plus in college I have a mid term a final and a big paper per class and that's it. Sure none of those are fun but they are all that we have to do. High School you have homework from eight different classes per night! In college you get to set your own schedule and you are not even required to show up to one of the six classes. If you do happen to show up to a class all you do is sit there and take notes but even then you don't HAVE to take notes because the power point slides are going to be online anyway after class. The profs never call on you two read or to answer questions you simply sit there then leave. You get to go wherever you want for lunch, eat whatever you want hell you could even eat in class. I'm not saying the work is easier in college because it isn't but in my opinion I'd rather deal with quality than quantity. Having to cram or stay up all night once or twice a quarter is better in my opinion than having to do two hours of homework every night. Plus in college say you don't like a class boom 10 weeks and you are done with it and of course you get to pick whatever class you want to take. Look at what I am doing right now its 10:00 am and I'm in my house doing paper work about to shower. Where would I be if this was high school? probably already 3 classes deep and have more homework than a housewife.

I think it also has a lot to do with what kind of degree(s) you have. I take no less than 18 credit hours a quarter which results to roughly five classes a quarter. I've never had a day off during the week in which I didn't have class and because of one of my majors I practically have papers due once or twice a week.
ReplyDeleteNot to mention most my classes aren't lecture. They are very hands-on where you actually do have class discussions and read out loud to the class certain passages. So I think it has more to do with what kind of major(s) you have then college being compared to high school.
I completely agree with Frieda, as I also took no less than 18 credit hours each semester. I would also add that it depends on the school that you go to as well. I'm not going to lie, at Bethany, absenses from classes were noted and counted against your grade. In the class that was just me, Keven, and Dr. Deal, it was very noticable when Keven overslept through the class.
ReplyDeleteAnd homework? Don't even get me started on how much reading I had to do. And when most of your classes have 8 kids or less, you have to do the reading, because the professor will call on you, and you will have to know the answer.
Also, eating wherever you want for lunch? Maybe if you are rich and have no afternoon classes, so you can drive the 15 minutes to Wellsburgh, WV to grab Wendy's. No sir, we all ate in the caf.
All that this post really taught me is how sub-par the educational systems and standards are at OSU. Proof of that can be found in your horrific grammar, punctuation, and use of the number "two" when you meant to use the word "to".
Good Day Sir!
Alan, you're my fav
ReplyDeleteok you have no one to blame but yourself for taking more than the minimum hours to be considered full time. also when you mentioned reading it reminded me that we probably do have alot of homework and readings every night in my classes I just never read them but then again I guess I forgot to factor in certain things:
ReplyDelete1) how many majors/minors
2) how big of a school
3) do you live by the "C's get degrees" motto?
4) I don't think what your major is makes that much of a difference because for example Biology to my Brother is something of interest to him so much so that he reads about it in his spare time. So to say you have more reading than I do in a class is a good point but then again I guarantee you like reading more than I do and also chose a major that you knew would involve heavy reading
in conclusion College > High School
I completely disagree with this post. It makes it sound as if you're just trying to get by in life, but what is that really going to do for you in the real world? You should have taken college seriously and seen it as a real opportunity rather than a burden. Ya, companies want you to have a college degree but that won't do anything for you when it comes to getting a job. They want to see people who are driven and motivated - this post doesn't sound like those are two words you would use to describe your college experience. I really wish that you would have taken your college experience seriously... I think you will too in the long run.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that statement is necessarily true, Mr. Anonymous. I am not motivated at all when it comes to college, but when it comes to "real life" and my job, I am incredibly motivated. I have worked my butt off to get internships and get work in the profession of my choice. So I think you can be unmotivated in college, but still show your employer that you will be motivated in the job. Your college degree won't tell them how motivated you were and how often you went to class. But, I can see your point of view and I think this could be true if the person translated their lack of motivation in college into their career. But I suppose we won't know with Adam until he gets a job ;)
ReplyDeleteyeah I don't like college but I love work ask anyone that has worked with me. I just want to get college out of the way so I can start a job gain some experience and some coin to boot. When I am given a task by an employer I finish the job to the best of my ability and if given the chance I'll go the extra 100 miles.
ReplyDeleteI think if you are going to school for a specific degree and career choice then working hard in college is great for you. You do make a good point though I should put forth my best effort in everything I'll give you that its just hard for me to get motivated when all I want to do is graduate so I can start working anywhere really doing anything I just want to work.
Adam, is that anonymous post by a parent or guardian of yours?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea who anonymous is, guess that's why they are anonymous...
ReplyDeleteI know who it is, but I can't reveal their secret...they obviously chose anonymous for a reason...
