Bell Yell - Adam

When I was a student at Wauseon High School I had a teacher that would teach from what he called "bell to bell" which is pretty self explanatory.

anyway since I have been going to classes for 16 years there is something I noticed in all of them.

the teacher yell at the end of class...

It seems like when the bell rings or class is over and students are packing up and shipping out every teacher always has to yell something during this time. for example:

Don't Forget Michaelson Chapters 4 and 5 for next time and I will be in my office on Thursday but not Wednesday

and its never just silence or an e-mail after class no it must be yelled and it can only be spoken during the rustling and leaving period. Are teachers taught this technique when in school? Ok now chapter 8 of teaching 101 is the bell yell it is very difficult to do you must wait until right when they begin to leave then start shouting out information that they may already know or it isn't important this is key to any successful teaching career. I couldn't think of any more movie examples but I know they are out there I'm just done with my Paper Work

  1. As I future teacher I can say this is not something taught to us lol This kind of phenomenon falls under two categories. Either the teacher is not prepared and forgets until the last minute to remind students or students are just plain rude. I know plenty of instances in which students start packing up ten minutes before class is even supposed to be over. Teachers can't always anticipate that.

  2. Sorry I had to test because last time I tried to comment I typed this big long comment then it didn't go through because I don't feel like setting up another account.

    ANYWAY
As my fellow FTA said it is VERY true students begin to zip bags, shuffle papers, scoot chairs, and talk in the last 5-10 minutes of class. Think about how annoying that is! Regardless of how well a teacher's time management and classroom management skills, we think we dismiss ourselves (especially in college)
In MY classroom #1 motto is " The teacher dismisses you NOT the bell", bells are more guidelines for when you should leave because let's be honest it doesn't really take 3-5 minutes to walk to the next class. So in my classroom if students want to have time to use the bathroom, go to lockers, or chat in between classes they don't dare pack up early. It's all about consistency not control.

Also, it is a time management issue BUT we aren't perfect and just like us procrastinators sometimes the best ideas and thoughts come to us at the last minute! We all like to push thoughts until the absolute last minute sometimes....
