Draft - Brian

The NFL draft is tomorrow, and that means pizza, beer, and football for 3 hours. What can be better than that?

Lets take a look at what the Steelers can do with their draft picks in the first two rounds (because after that, who really cares?).

The Steelers own the 18th pick in the draft and they have a few options there. If CB Joe Haden from Florida is available, that would be their best option. Defense has always been the Steelers staple, and that is the direction they should go. Their pass defense was suspect last year (which can partially be contributed to the loss of Polamolu) and their corners had only ONE interception all year. That needs to be fixed, and Haden can be the solution. If Haden is off the board, either center Maurkice Pouncey or guard Mike Iupati could help shore up the woeful offensive line Pittsburgh has.

The second round will be used to draft either a CB or an offensive lineman, whichever issue wasn't addressed in the first round.

The interesting part could be if the Steelers trade Ben Roethlisberger for a top 10 pick. The Raiders are the most likely trade partner at number 8. This will allow the Steelers to take an elite offensive tackle with that pick, and Haden at 18. But one can only dream...

The Bengals are the second team I will look at (for Alan's sake). I think they have a relatively easy first round choice. Their glaring weaknesses are WR and TE. The two top choices would be WR Dez Bryant and TE Jermaine Gresham. I would go with Gresham because he is a very balanced TE and doesn't have the character issues like Bryant does. Either way, either play could immediately step in and start, instantly improving a weak Bengals passing game.

If this post bored you then you don't love the draft. And if you don't love the draft, then you don't love the NFL. And if you don't love the NFL then I'm not offended for you being bored.

  1. Agreed... I think we need to take Gresham. I think our WRs will be okay this year, with Antonio Bryant being able to take some of the heat off of the Ocho. With Gresham who can block (which is great for our top of the line running game) and be a part of the passing game, our TE situation would be vastly improved to help the offense immensely
