As some of you may know I have one other sibling, an older brother named Tyler Schuch.
Being a younger brother there are things that you begin to realize growing up, the most important and noticeable is the fact that older brothers are better than you at everything.
It is a natural phenomenon I can't explain it and I know I'm not the only case but for some reason older brothers are better than you at everything you do. For example as children growing up Tyler was able to beat Mega Man X easily and I'm not talking about just defeating all the enemies but also taking down Sigma. He was probably 10 at most when he was able to do that, now at the age of 22 I am still unable to do what a 10 year old child could do or at least with the ease that we could accomplish it. Why? because he is my big brother and that's the way it works.
I've done little research on this topic with some of my peers for instance the Brandon, Travis Smith brother pair. When I lived with Travis last school year he would practice Dr. Mario nonstop in hopes that a rematch would take place with, Brandon, his older brother. Finally the day came and they faced off on the NES Brandon was down 1-0 I believe...then the older brother phenomenon kicked it and Brandon won the series in an incredible 2-0 run ending the series at 2-1.
My other roomate of 08 was Dain Helbert an older brother. He began to explain to me how no matter the circumstance he is always able to destroy his younger brothers in any competition.
This phenomenon I believe is not limited to just Brother to Brother relationships but also can occure between Sister to Sister relations. However I haven't conducted tests to find Brother to sister nor Sister to Brother results.
Finally another interesting finding is a term that has been coined as "Old Man Strength" this term was made popular by my friend Jake Richards growing up in an only child environment he is neither the older nor younger brother however despite that a new finding surfaced. The fact that his father, despite age difference, and the fact that Jake worked out heavily in comparison to Jeff, was still able to best his son in competitions of strength.
an interesting experiment would be a clash between old man strength and big brother brawn.
younger siblings feel free to give testimonials in the form of comments I'm looking to expand my theory.

Speaking as an older brother, its true. We are better than our younger brothers at everything. Sometimes its even paradoxically true. For instance: I am better than Shark at music, but I'm also better at not playing instruments and not dancing than he is.
ReplyDeleteI would like to submit that the Brother/Sister relations may only prove true for overlapping competitions. I am not better than Susan at doing nails, hair, makeup, or any of the likes. I am better than her at driving, breathing, watching movies, and having a thyroid.
Rats off on the awesome title by the way.
Looking at my younger sister and I, I can tell you that it really depends on the situation. I can out-write, out-read, out-videogame, and out-just about anything that has some sort of educational or cultural kind of notation. But my sister could definitely physically kick my ass. My younger brother, well I think he just wins in general at just about anything. So I’m pretty sure the brother/sister phenomenon doesn’t work. Now, I don't know your brother or anything but I'm sure when it comes to good looks you'd win hands down ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that matthew can own me at most things...but then again I'm also pretty sure that I own him at everything that actually matters in life.

As the youngest of six...I can say that this theory is pretty solid as far as my own experiences. I am only better than Laura at one thing: memorizing song lyrics. Seriously, that is the only thing. It is depressing. Emily is basically better than me at everything except being vegan and my brothers are awesome without even trying.
ReplyDeleteI think this might be because all the good genes were already used by the time I was born. I mean, I'm the shortest of all the siblings and have the worst handwriting. I got the worst teeth (I'm the only sibling that needed braces) and the biggest boobs (which while they may be aesthetically pleasing, are usually just a nuisance).
I must concur with Ellen. I am better than her at a lot of things, such as following an aerobic instructor's movements and knitting. However, she's better than me at more things than just memorizing song lyrics. She's also better at writing "A" papers the day before they're due, making up birthday poems, and making friends. (She probably makes friends so easily because she makes up birthday poems for them. I should work on that.) I think we are equal in our ability to perform "The Argument Clinic" from Monty Python's Flying Circus.
ReplyDeleteTrue story:
Laura said, "Ellen, will you take tap dancing lessons with me?"
Ellen answered, "Why? So we can find one more thing that you're better at than me?"
Me and Nick tend to be very evenly matched in what we are better at. I mean he's giant and I'm small, so speaking in terms of sports, sports that require more speed and finesse, like basketball, I kill him, while those that require size, like a hot dog eating contest, he'll win. The video games thing is the most important aspect tho. I feel like the big brother effect almost always applies here, cuz nick always beats me in everything. the only game i've ever been better than him at is NCAA March Madness, and to be fair he was still really good, i was just amazing.
