So today I was hanging out at the house with Scott and we were watching sponge bob square pants (I'll give you one guess who had the remote) but anyway a commercial came on that made me think and here it is.
Barbie potty training pups, wow what fun all the best parts of owning a pet, feeding and cleaning up after it I can't wait to play with that toy. then Scott started talking about the types of toys girls have when they are young and I realized that girls have the crappiest toys by far.
Toys for girls are actual chores and work, Baby doll that actually cries, wakes you up at night, and forces you to give it alot of attention yippie, or Barbie I have to dress her and comb her hair and clean up her barbie mansion or easy bake ovens?
all girls toys suck and are hard work that I would consider not to be toys.
boys play with squirt guns, nerf guns, bb guns, paint ball guns, and alot of other really awesome toys like video games: call of duty, halo, duck hunt.
if you ask me girls get ripped off when it comes to childhood toys

Now when I was a kid I definitely played with Barbies and Easy Bake Ovens (Which is probably why I can make some mean desserts)but I was also the girl that had nerf gun wars with my Dad and played Legos with my brother. Being girls we might've had what you consider "lame" stuff but we could also do the same things boys did. Even now, I'd take a few hours of playing video games than going shopping anyday.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have to say that even though I played with Barbies and dolls and played dress up as a kid, my favorite time was playing cars, Power Rangers, and Ninja Turtles with my brother. Although, I do have to agree that boys get the more fun toys growing up!
ReplyDeleteIs that commercial real?!?!? Please tell me its a joke.
ReplyDeleteI've studied this phenomeon before - most notably in my Visual Construction of Gender class in college - and it is because children's toys support our society's gender roles. Boys are given manipulation toys because that is what boys are "supposed" to do when they have a career, work with their hands. Girls are given toys that teach them how to nurture and take a side-line role because that is what women are "supposed" to do as adults.
ReplyDeleteNot surprisingly, I take huge issue with this and am fully planning on my children playing with both gender's toys.
