The semi colon... its the wtf punctuation

first off why call it a semicolon? it isn't half of a colon if it was it would look like two half dots or if it was just one dot should not a period be called a semi-colon?

I have a theory on how the semicolon was crafted. I believe that two very smart english scholars were competing by writing and grading each others works. finally one of them made a horrific grammatical mistake the comma splice.

in an fact to save face the scholar placed a period above the comma claiming it to be a... "semicolon" and every great english scholar knows that semi colons work exactly like periods.

quickly the other scholar pretended to konw that obviously well known rule and thus the semicolon was born

seriously what is the point of the damn thing? just put a period... and if you are not done with your thought us a comma there is no need for both. and if you are going to use them why call them semi colons? they don't look anything like half of a colon
