Worthless? - Brian

Kacie Graham Rank the worth of different sports. Lacrosse, bowling, hockey, gymnastics as well as the standards (do I really have to specificy?).

Dictionary.com defines a sport as "an athletic activity requiring skill and physical prowess, often of a competitive nature." In defining the worth of a sport (as Kacie further defined it with something along the lines of whether its a "real" sport) athleticism plays a predominant role in my eyes. Skill is also necessary, and most sports require some level of skill.

Therefore, the most worthy sports must combine both athleticism and skill. This would include the obvious choices of basketball and football, along with hockey, lacrosse, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, NASCAR and wrestling. These athletes must not only improve their athletic abilities, but must also train for the needed skill to compete at a high level.

The next step down would be those sports that take little athletic ability, but tons of skill. These sports include baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and a variety of other sports that you could name. These players rely on little athletic ability, but must have the best skills to compete.

The least "worthy" of sports would include those that really only rely on athletic ability, and skill is not really needed. The main sport that I can think of that fits in this category would be running. Sure, you have to be an incredible athlete to run a marathon or do cross country, but you rely on athletic ability and there is not thinking or skill that involves itself during the sport.

I'm sure that a lot of people will be on me for these picks, but I stand by the fact that some sports are just more worthy than other sports. Their may be better athletes in some of the lower categories, but a great sport must also include skill, which is harder to achieve than athleticism.

  3. I see where you're coming from on this but I have to argue the tennis point. I think being able to sprint back and forth, up and down and pivoting from one way to the other on a court for several hours takes athleticism.

    What about curling? ;)
